The last bit of commentary by Rorion is what interests me most. He is a real marketer. What's next? Ultimate fighting with weapons?
ReplyDeleteIt'd be interesting to see Kali and Escrima and Kendo and Fencing practitioners get lured into an "Ultimate Weapon" match where one of Rorion's prodigies wields the "Gracie Beatstick" and shows them all that traditional weapon arts are outdated and impractical.
Heck, let's just take on anything that's traditional.
Maybe Rorion can take on Christmas traditions around the world and show how Gracie Winterfest is more effective, pound for pound.

I'm always curious about how the Gracies say that Helio modified Judo by making it rely less on strength and athleticism.
ReplyDeleteI appreciate the level that they've taken the Judo ground game to, and wouldn't take anything from it, but it doesn't seem like it uses any less strength or more skill.
I mean, watch some of Mifune Sensei's footage. How is that relying on strength or athleticism? Judo has always been about maximum efficiency/minimum effort.

Come to think of it, I never hear the Gracies talk about Judo. All that comes to mind is that old match that ended with Helio getting kicked in the head.

ReplyDeleteI think the Gracies sort of use Judo/Jujutsu interchangeably when they talk about the roots of their art.
Maeda was a Judoka, but I think he referred to what he did as Jujutsu after he was excused from the Kodokan.
OK, I was thinking too much of Sugata Sanshiro, where there's a clear distinction between Jujutsu and Judo.
