While we're on the topic, has anyone noticed that aikido and judo throws tend to end in different kinds of falls from uke. A lot of aiki falls end up smearing uke facedown into the mat in an armbar or else throwing uke away and letting go of him. Judo throws tend to throw uke straight downward into the mat with tori still holding on.
.
Folks whose minds jive with aikido tend to fear judo and judo-types tend to hate aiki-like falls.
.
Of course these are generalizations - but has anyone else noticed this?
I would agree that judo falls feel different then aikido falls.
ReplyDeleteMore often in judo you get that air fall where it's all mat. Meaning you remember standing and you remember landing but you don't remember the part where you're in the air. Really good double footsweeps always feel that way to me.
The falls feel bigger in aikido, maybe since uke is more responsible for landing, maybe because they aren't being accelerated by tori as often. Also in aikido you get that oh boy moment before the fall more often where you know its coming but can't avoid it. the prefall often has a little profanity in it as opposed to judo where like I said before its just all of a sudden you be on dat mat.
Yep - I'd say that the profanity is in the pre-fall in aikido and in the aftermath of the fall in judo. I am one of those folks who feel like the judo falls are bigger and scarier than the aikido falls.
ReplyDeleteI've got to agree with you there Pat. Judo falls scare the crap out of me.
