This is one of my favorite choking techniques. Extremely versatile. I like to put it into play from a side position with my legs around him - as if mounted on him but facing his side. The BJJ name is Ezekiel, while the judo name is sode guruma jime.

Hmmm... Not sure why Disqus is not working on this post - perhaps because it was already in the queue to be published when I added the Disqus. I'll give it a day or two to sort itself out...
ReplyDeleteI was working on my shime waza on Wednesday and found this one 5 times in randori! Big fan.
ReplyDeleteNot sure that the strangle as demonstrated would be legal for judo -- I have concerns about the "fingers inside the sleeve" part. Will check tonight with my sensei.
ReplyDeleteSodegurumajime is an artery choke, not a strangle. I'll have to go back and watch this vid to see how he demonstrates it, but it's easy to apply either as choke or strangle. The grabbing inside the sleeve is a BJJ thing - I think it probably is illegal in judo - but it's also easy to grab the middle of your sleeve or even your forearm.
ReplyDeleteYeah... Not all the positions on the clip afford a good view, but at 0:37 you can pretty clearly see that it is a choke and not a strangle. Later, when he does the choke from inside uke's guard, it looks like uke could have turned his head to make it a choke instead of a strangle if he'd wanted to.
